Health Info & Resources for Seniors
Many times when an individual requires care in a skilled nursing facility, the decision on where to place the patient needs to be made immediately. The decision is often triggered by a medical event, like stroke or a fall, and the patient is treated at a hospital and later discharged directly to a skilled nursing facility. It is important to know what skilled nursing is and which skilled nursing facilities are in the area.
If and when a decision needs to be made to select a facility, little time is available to research nursing centers, much less manage the emotional stress and chaos that ensues in the wake a medical emergency.Skilled Nursing Facilities, sometimes referred to as nursing homes or rehabilitation centers, provide 24-hour care for those requiring rehabilitation or for those with long-term illnesses. Services may include medical care, therapies and assistance with activities of daily living.
There are two common scenarios when patients require a skilled nursing stay.
One scenario is the short term stay. Some patients go to rehabilitation after a stroke, surgery or other medical complication that requires nursing supervision and a regimen of physical, occupational, and / or speech therapies with the goal of returning home, either to one’s house or a senior living community.
The other scenario is the patient who is dealing with long-term illness, medical complications or otherwise requires on-going medical attention and cannot return home.
Depending on an individual’s circumstances, costs for skilled nursing and rehabilitation can be covered fully or partially by Medicare, Medicaid, major insurance, and long-term care insurance. In some cases, care needs to be paid for by an individual’s private funds, in which case monthly costs can range between $10,000 and $14,000. Facilities are licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
