Celebrate Older Americans Month
Celebrating Older Americans Month all older adults are encouraged to blaze a trail to civic engagement. Civic Engagement means working to make a difference in the lives of your community and its members. Community service and volunteering are common ways to refer to the act of helping others. No matter what you call it, older Americans are doing it, and in higher numbers than ever before.
Downsizing Your Home Tips
Got too much stuff, too much house, too many bills? Here are some quick tips for downsizing:
1. Access your needs
What do you really need? Walk around your home and see what you’ve used in the past year and how often. One tip is to take everything out of your closets, cabinets and shelves and only put back what you actually use. If you like to hang on to your stuff, you may want to ask your spouse or children to do this for you. Don’t throw away anything valuable. If something might be worth a good amount of money, sell it. If not, be sure to recycle or dispose of it properly. Do not flush or throw into the trash any expired/unwanted medicines. They will contaminate the water supply. Any drugstore will dispose of these items responsibly, free of charge. You can also see if your city has a hazardous waste disposal facility.
The Ghost Army
Folks who read these devotionals are either old enough to remember World War II or are familiar with the many stories and heroes of the war. Everyone has heard of Generals Patton and Eisenhower, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Enola Gay, and Rosie the Riveter.
But have you heard of the Twenty-Third Headquarters Special Troops? No? Don’t be surprised — up until about 20 years ago, almost no one had heard of the Ghost Army of World War II.
Preserving Our Land’s Heritage
Did you know that Wildlands Conservancy protects land across 10 counties in our area covering over 54,000 acres? It protects these lands for us, the public. For over 40 years its mission has been to acquire and preserve land and its habitat.
RSVP's Cyber Seniors Program
One of the highlights of my trip to the 2014 AARP Conference in Boston was being able to view the premier of the movie Cyber Seniors.
The very entertaining film documented the experiences of high school students and the seniors they mentored on using some of the latest technologies, like Facebook, YouTube, Skype and the Internet.
