The thing about hitting 50 is that you’re not old—yet. But a lot of people in the Lehigh Valley behave as if they were suddenly too ancient to make new friends.
The truth is that the moment you start self-isolating, you lose an important part of what makes you feel and stay young: getting social. Socializing and staying social are absolutely central to how you age. The more you talk, laugh, and share experiences with others, the longer your mind and body remain energized with positivity.
So how do you maintain a social life and make new friends when you are in your 50s and over? Friends from work? Sure. But where else are you going to meet new friends?

Keep up with tech
Technology is a big part of our lives. Video chatting, logging into your favorite app, sending a WhatsApp—all these allow you to stay in touch with the people and things that matter to you.
These also keep you up-to-date with community life. From making an appointment with your dentist to hiring a plumber for a job, most things happen through a smartphone. You don’t need to be a tech wiz, but you need to be involved with tech to find people.
Look after your ears
Being able to hear properly makes socializing such a joy. For people who start to struggle with hearing, it’s easy to feel isolated in conversations. If you let it build up, before long, you’ll be left on your own.
That’s why hearing tests and devices such as hearing aids by Oticon are designed to protect your hearing health and your social life.
Hit the gym
Exercise is more than just keeping your body in shape. It lifts your mood and can also help you meet new people who are just as keen as you are on staying healthy and active. Many gyms and fitness centers have classes for all ages, and the bonus is that you get to train with others.
This can be both motivating and a fantastic way to build connections with gym buddies of all ages.
Use social media
Who doesn’t use social media? There are so many online platforms out there that can be a great source of inspiration and community support.
You can find your community on Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and many others, including Booktok and Facebook groups.
Join a class
Is there anything you’d like to learn or perform? There are so many classes available, from live classes in your area to online classes, that it is practically impossible to stay stuck alone. Want to learn some new cooking skills? Hop on a local cooking workshop! Feel like boosting your Spanish? Look for an online class. People with the same interests will also attend the same classes.

Meet your neighbors
There is always room for a tight neighborhood community. Not every neighborhood blooms into a close-knit family of sorts, but the ones that do, do it well. It doesn’t cost anything to prepare a plate of cookies, reach out, and meet your neighbors.
Stop letting age define you
This has to be the key mantra of your social life. Age does not define your worth nor your friendships. The biggest obstacle to meeting new people is your own mind repeating to you that you are too old for this.
Are you ready to make new friends? What are you waiting for?
